Director Development - Advanced Concepts BKLYN

Lead and manage a team of Advanced Concepts product developers to work ahead of the Inline product creation calendar (~ 22-46 months out) to (1) effectively drive the transition of future-led revolutionary innovations to commercial readiness ahead of competition and (2) to drive evolutionary innovations, based on consumer and category needs to commercial readiness, e.g., to ensure ongoing freshness and innovation updates (on product/process/profitability) between big revolutionary product introductions.

Key Responsibilities

Advanced Concepts Development:

  • Execute the strategic development direction for Advanced Concepts that enables the inception of new and/or innovative designs, components, processes, materials, and concepts into a manufacturable and marketable finished product
  • Drive close collaboration with cross-functional Advanced Concept team members in Design and Marketing
  • Ensure that all materials, components as well as finished goods are tested and adhere to adidas performance/quality standards (material, component, FGT, Fit&Wear/Biomechanical, safety, A01 requirements)
  • Drive collaboration with horizontal and vertical Product Operations teams to share knowledge and define adaptation potential across the Brand for new technologies and support inline implementation
  • Collaborate with Innovation Management to (a) create transparency on innovation pipeline, (b) facilite prioritization of innovation projects and (c) coordinate innovation projects
  • Support Innovation Management to establish processes and systems to manage Advanced Concepts
  • For FUTURE led innovations
    • Ensure future led innovations are transioned to commercial readiness ahead of competition
    • Ensure future led innovations are validated against innovation readiness, fit for purpose, feasibility, scalability in terms of machine investments and cost engineering
  • For Product Operations led innovations
    • Drive technology research and advanced development process resulting in timely, accurate and conclusive direction from ideation to commercialization
    • Ensure ongoing freshness between big future led product introductions through research, development and commercialization of Product Operations led innovations
    • Ensure legal requirements, i.e. interlectual property (IP) rights or non-disclosure agreements (NDA), are established

People Management:

  • Build the appropriate structure to be able to manage the respective organization effectively, identify and develop the future talents and create realistic succession scenarios for key positions.
  • Ensure appropriate leadership skills are present at every level through creating a motivational and supportive work environment in which employees are coached, trained and provided with career opportunities through development. 
  • Allocate the different topics and work streams to the respective teams and employees considering experience, complexity, workload and organizational efficiency.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate team workload and organizational efficiency with the support of systems, data and analysis and team feedback and make appropriate changes in order to meet business needs.
  • Provide team members/direct reports with clear direction and targets that are aligned with business needs and Legal objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of wear and physical product testing 
  • Strong E2E product creation understanding and profound knowledge of key  creation processes (e.g. constructions, patterns, technology, manufacturing, materials  etc.)
  • Strong IT skills (MS office) and ability to work with Product Data Management (PDM) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) Systems
  • Strong understanding of costing principles and ability to negotiate as required


  1. Four-year college or university degree with emphasis on engineering and/or manufacturing and/or footwear technology
  2. Minimum 10+ years of progressive work experience in the athletic footwear industry, specializing in product development
  3. Proven record of accomplishment in the field of footwear development
  4. Exposure to the latest in materials, components, processes, and concepts
  5. Minimum 3+ years of experience in managing a team
