Designer Materials

Purpose

To design industry leading executions of Footwear and/or Apparel materials.

Key Accountabilities

Continuously aware of information needed to design a consumer and brand relevant collection.  Should include all possible sources to gain this information:

  • Trade fairs, cultural events, and sporting events, athlete insights
  • Trade publications, general interest press, trend services, fashion and sportswear magazines and websites
  • Store checks, market visits, and team travel as provided
  • Relevant forecast and sell-through numbers from our Marketing counterparts

Assists in seasonal and long-term design direction for Creative Direction within the following topics:

  • Apparel, Accessories, and Footwear Materials
  • Knits, Wovens, Leathers/Synthetic Leather, Nonwovens, Finishes, and Trims
  • Incorporating Graphics/Print, Color, and Branding Direction
  • Application onto Footwear and Apparel Silhouettes (Accessories if relevant).

Contributes to aforementioned design direction by, but not limited to:

  • Providing trend forecasting content relevant to our consumer and brand
  • Providing direction and assisting in developing materials with the Material Team
  • Supports M3 Senior Team Lead to build content for collaborative stakeholders

Works closely with various internal and external partners. This includes but is not limited to:

            •Providing Material content and direction

            •Collaboration and critiquing

            •To understand technical details of the materials and product

Builds top-line range strategy into their concept and material range. This includes but is not limited to:

            •Support Senior Team Lead by owning holistic concept overviews and rollouts

            •Supports communication content to cross-functional partners to align strategy

            •Support and inform cross-functional moments and strategy across brand

MATERIAL EXECUTION

Design Footwear and/or Apparel Material executions for Creative Direction with input from cross-functional partners. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Seasonal prep and research stated above
  • Design technical and innovative materials with attention to look, feel, and function 
  • Create material innovations with consideration of sustainability and efficiencies  
  • Assists in creating design presentations; both physical and digital
  • Exploratory process to reach final solution
  • Creates Material drawings and tech packs 
  • Considers the larger impact of creating merchandized material range
  • Works closely with Development and testing to assist in development process & costing; meet development timelines and calendar deadlines per seasonal milestone.
  • Travel worldwide for development trips

Knowledge, Capabilities and Experience 

  • Computer Skills
  • Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign
  • Power Point/Key Note
  • Apple Mac Operating system
  • 3D not required, but beneficial
  • Understanding of brand history and current positioning
  • Understanding of marketplace (footwear/streetwear/urban) history, consumer, and current positioning
  • Has a strong understanding of material innovations and trends and application
  • Ability to understand design concepts and think conceptually
  • Ability to create material designs that meet brand needs and commercial opportunities
  • Ability to design for new initiatives and products with a fresh, innovative perspective
  • Ability to operate in a fast pace, ever changing work environment
  • Works well in a team environment. This position requires employee to engage with many stakeholders, as well as manage various information and relationships
  • Ability and desire to push themselves, others, and the brand forward.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with key business partners
  • Ability to creatively problem solve
  • Strong presentation skills 

Desire to comprehensively understand technical facets of material. Including but not limited to: 

  • Technical terminology 
  • Machinery 
  • Manufacturing 
  • Costing 
  • Construction 
  • Development process 
  • Testing

Qualifications

  1. Preferably a BSc or MSc in Textiles, Textile Design, Textile Management, or Bachelor Degree in similar design fields 
  2. Direct experience in textile, footwear, fashion or and design relevant environment 
  3. Thorough knowledge of art and design with clear understanding of visual design or any design related environment
  4. Three years relevant work experience
  5. Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for degree
